Metal fiber is a class of materials that are continuous filaments or are in discrete elongated pieces, similar to lengths of thread. It is made of metallic materials, pure metals such as nickel, copper, tungsten, molybdenum; metal alloys such nickel alloys, ferrous alloys (FeCrAl alloy as example,) stainless steel, etc.
Physical properties of Metal fiber/metallic fiber:
1: high density
2: ductile and malleable
3: high melting point, high temperature and oxidization resistant
4: conduct electricity and heat well
Classification of Fibers
1: Metallic fibers are composed of metal, Plastic coated metal, metal coated plastic or a film completely rounded by a metal.
2: A sheet of transparent plastic film is applied to each side of the adhesive coated foil. The assembly is then slit into narrow widths. Many metallic fiber have capability of undergoing large plastic deformation and strain hardening after yielding.
Metallic fibers are primarily used as fashionable lively effects in many textile fabrications as e.g hand made embroidery tufted rugs etc. Gold and silver are used for ancient times for the purpose of fabric decorations as yarns.
Metal Wool
Metal Wool is produced by the careful shaving of wire using precision tooling into a web of strands which resemble wool. By adjusting the shaving process, the size or thickness of the each of the strands can be modified.
Applications and uses:
Antistatic & antimagnetic waves fabrics, high temperature resistant metal fabric, high temperature resistant non-woven, sintered filter media, antistatic plastic are also products of metallic fiber.
Heat resistant separation material is a range of metal fiber fabric to withstand extreme temperatures. They are metal fiber products b for the production of anti-static textile materials.
These stainless steel fiber grains for conductive plastics are the most efficient solution to protect against Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI).
Metallic filaments are used fordecorative purposes eg. in Lamps etc. These are also used in upholstery fabric and textiles. Stainless steel and other metals fibers are also used for communication purposes in the form of telephone lines and television cables lines. The most common end use for metallic fibers is upholstery fabric and textiles such as Lame and brocade Germproof fabric (Ni fiber), High temperature dust collecting gas. These are also used in highly
computerized area where such shocks are expected. They are alsoprotective suits and space suits.
